Edited; I just had a great idea! I'm going to issue a £6 thrifting challenge. You guys show me what you vintage delights can find for £6 (or 12US$ or whatever in equivalent currency) and I'll link to your post. There will be a little pressie for who I think gets the best deal!I'll give you till the 15th of august.Okay?
First one in for the challenge is Mirre check out her haul!
I mentioned in my last post how diffcult it was for me to get my head around Londons vintage prices.I thrift as much to save pennies as for vintage style but in London vintage shopping can hardly be described as thrifting in fact vintage goodies are as expensive as their modern counterparts.I know that wages are higher and people are used to spending more on most things but it just seemed odd to not be saving money by buying vintage!
I then thought that I would see just how much more I could get for my money up north as opposed to in London. In the interest of market research you know, not in any way so I could justify going thrifting 3 times in one week! Oh no,no I was just thinking of you guys really because I know you all need to know don't you?
In Vintage Heaven the planter above was priced at £10 and I managed to haggle to £6 so that was my budget for the 'research'. First I visited what I class as an expensive charity shop.Cancer Research employ people who are able to value donated items and so the prices tend to be on a par with stuff sold on ebay.It still works out cheaper as you don't have to pay the postage but there are rarely any fantastic bargains.
My £6 bought me two 50's blue glass jugs and a 60's amber glass vase (remember my top-tip for Christmas?) A bit more than the one planter don't you think?
The next visit was to my all time favourite thrifting haunt.Emmaus is one of those places where you really have to hunt out your treaure and nothing is priced. What you pay depends on how much you buy and who serves you!
So for my £6 I got...
... 2 50's pyrex plates...
...one pyrex platter...
...one snowflake pyrex casserole...
...three 1930's mixing bowls (one is huge!)...
...one blue enamel bowl and a vintage melamine teaset...
...one amber glass bowl...
...one boxed 1950's necklace...
...and finally a beautiful little vintage sewing basket...
...still holding it's vintage contents!
No wonder I can't get my head around London prices! I think that Donna is right when she suggested I thrift up here and have a retail outlet down in London. Umm...if only I had the time!
